Story

In this 19th century, supernatural winter epic, a drunken applejack salesman must go from zero to hero, defeating hundreds of beavers to become the greatest fur trapper in North America. Director Mike Cheslik estimates that the mascot costumes cost around $10,000, and the crew purchased all of the costumes online.

A black-and-white, essentially silent film has never been so much fun, nor has it ever been made with such a richly adolescent heart, yet Hundred Beavers channels all its ambitious, lo-fi energy into one of the most visceral films I ‘ve seen in a long time. With no money, six beaver costumes, and his spare time with his friends, Mike Cheslik creates a Looney-Tunes-level physical comedy, incorporating endless visuals and simple plot mechanics that only get bigger, better, and sillier.

While the film isn’t necessarily emotional, I was moved, if not by the characters, by the filmmaking

The monotonous story of an apple farmer becoming a master beaver hunter is spiced up with revenge, romance, and subtle intelligence, leading to a climax filled with payoffs carefully placed throughout the run time, amplifying Hundred Beavers’ ability and spirit. Lacking studio backing or theatrical distribution, Hundred of Beavers has nothing to exploit and nothing to sacrifice, as it stands on its own until the very end.

In doing so, it soars to such dizzying heights that it is unwaveringly significant that there is still so much imagination left, proving that there is still so much more to be done, a true testament to the power of visual storytelling
